OUR VISION
Matt Smith — known simply as M. — is a Gold Coast–based mixed-media artist working across acrylic, oil pastel and pastel on canvas and paper. His practice balances instinct and intention, layering colour, texture and expressive mark-making to create works that feel both raw and deliberate. A finalist in the Sydney Rocks Art Prize in 2001, M. has exhibited in solo and group shows, including at Lotus Gallery and World Fine Art Gallery NYC, with his work now held in private collections across Europe, North America and Australia and featured in television and style publications alongside his clothing line. At the heart of Art of M. is a deeply personal process — a visual expression of the subconscious where memory, language, mythology and technology intersect. Through layered symbols, gestures and fragments of text, his work explores themes of transformation, second chances and the evolving meanings we attach to words, creating pieces that invite viewers to reflect not just on what they see, but why they see it.
